Patchogue, NY - The National Park Service (NPS) seeks public input on the Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Management program for Fire Island National Seashore. This effort evaluates ORV use at the Seashore and the existing ORV regulation to allow for appropriate vehicular access while protecting park resources and providing a safe visitor experience. In addition, NPS plans to revise the current regulation to address changes to resources and use on Fire Island since the rule was implemented in 1987.
The Environmental Assessment for this project is publicly available https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FIIS_ORV. NPS will accept public comments on the three proposed actions and their potential impacts from May 28 to June 30, 2024. NPS must fulfill its public involvement requirement under the National Historic Preservation Act concurrently with the NEPA public involvement opportunities.
NPS will host both an in-person and a virtual public meeting to share information on the proposal. The in-person meeting on June 5 will include an open house and a 20-minute presentation, followed by an opportunity for a facilitated question and answer session. The virtual meeting on June 12 will include a 20-minute presentation and a virtual question and answer session. The purpose of the meetings and associated public comment period is to listen to public input on the Environmental Assessment.
