Patchogue, NY - The National Park Service announced today that the Fire Island Lighthouse tower will undergo a series of tests on the exterior coating to better understand how the building performs structurally, and to determine the cause of on-going problems including high moisture within the facility, and deterioration of the outer face of brick and shotcrete coating.

To ensure visitor safety while the scaffolding and swing staging is in use, the tower along with the outdoor terrace area around the exterior of the tower will be closed to the public for approximately 3 weeks beginning June 4, 2019. The Keepers Quarters Museum, gift shop and Lens Building will continue to be open daily to visitors. Once the initial testing is completed and the tower re-opens to the public, monitoring devices will remain in place for a full year to gather additional information on the tower's structural performance.

The Fire Island Lighthouse area offers exhibits, boardwalk nature trail, and public and education programs. The lighthouse is operated by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and is open daily. The lighthouse is located on the west end of Fire Island National Seashore and is accessible year-round by car. Parking is available at Robert Moses State Park in parking field #5 for a fee. For more information on visiting the lighthouse please visit www.nps.gov/FIIS or contact 631-661-4876.
