News Release Date: June 30, 2011 On Monday, July 4 at 10:00 a.m., Fire Island National Seashore is offering a program about the life and times of one of New York's four signers of the Declaration of Independence. Patriot William Floyd dared to sign this historic document despite the risk of losing his house, his property, and even his head! But did he really sign on the fourth of July? William Floyd (December 17, 1734 - August 4, 1821) was a delegate from New York in the First Continental Congress in 1774. As a member of the Second Continental Congress, from 1775-1783, 41-year-old William Floyd was the first of the New York delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. The 1-hour talk will take place on the porch of the Old Mastic House, located at the William Floyd Estate, 245 Park Drive, Mastic Beach, New York 11951. Parking is free and there is no fee for this program or for guided house tours, which are offered from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
