Contact: Elizabeth Rogers, 631-687-4766 Contact: Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, 631-661-4876 Fire Island Lighthouse tower opened to the public today after a two-week closure for repair."The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society provided critical funds to support this repair," said Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller. "We continue to work together to preserve this historic landmark and ensure a safe visitor experience." On February 21, Ocean Construction, LLC began work in the service room, just beneath the top floor of the lighthouse, to replace the aging subfloor and support beams. After the substructure was restored, the original copper floor was reinstalled. The Fire Island Lighthouse is operated by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. The light, still owned by the United States Coast Guard, is maintained and operated by the Society as a private aid to navigation. Visitors can explore maritime history through exhibits and interpretive programs, and may climb 192 steps to the top of the tower. The Keepers Quarters Museum at the Lighthouse is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; and, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tower tours are offered Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm; and, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
