Patchogue, NY – The National Park Service (NPS) announces the temporary closure of the Fire Island Lighthouse Tower in Fire Island National Seashore. The action is to ensure visitor safety after a concrete panel separated from the structure during heavy winds on March 4.

There is no structural damage to the 1858 lighthouse. Its inner brick core is structurally sound. A section of an exterior facade panel installed to protect the core in the 1980s separated from the structure. As a safety precaution, the lighthouse is closed until further notice. In addition, a portion of the terrace on the north side and the boardwalks leading to the north side of the lighthouse are also closed.

“The park is assessing the situation and exploring both short and long-term solutions, including the stabilization of the outer facade as an emergency repair," said Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Alexcy Romero.

Visitors are reminded to stay out of the closed areas. Although the tower is temporarily closed, the Lens Building and Keepers Quarters are still open and accessible to the public.
