Patchogue, New York—Fire Island National Seashore has extended the display of the Friends of Fire Island National Seashore's first art show, "The Essence of Fire Island." The gallery of paintings and photographs will be available for viewing from 1:00–4:00 p.m. on weekends at the Seashore's Patchogue Ferry Terminal, at 150 West Avenue in the Village of Patchogue, through July 5, 2010.

More than 30 pieces of original artwork, created by local artists inspired by their experiences on Fire Island, are among the semifinalists in the FFINS art contest. Eighteen of the works were selected for inclusion in an 18-month calendar, produced as a fundraiser for the non-profit group that supports operations and programs at Fire Island National Seashore.

Subject matter of the artwork ranges from scenic beach views, to renditions of the Fire Island Lighthouse, and fond reminiscences of life in a Fire Island community. The artwork is also for sale as a fundraiser for FFINS. For more information, visit www.ffins.org.
