  • Likewise, a whole cluster of hydrothermal features may be connected with another cluster. If the first group is active, the other may be less so. This shifting in the heat and water flow is called "exchange of function." The causes of exchange of function are not fully known. Perhaps steam bubbles build up somewhere in the channel, creating a valve. Another theory is that one plumbing system may somehow siphon off water from another system.
