At Point of Lands in the refuge, you can look out across the landscape to the Rio Grande and Black Mesa and imagine Spanish caravans of carretas, people, and livestock traversing the inhospitable habitat. After crossing the barren Jornada del Muerto for days upon days, the caravan headed straight for the live-giving Rio Grande waters. Adventure Awaits!
The Piro people lived near the Rio Grande hundreds of years before the influx of Spaniards. Upon the arrival of Juan de Oñate's expedition in 1598, the Piro people offered them much needed food.
What do you think is more precious than gold in this desert region?
