Dry Tortugas National Park continues work to restore the walls of Fort Jefferson in a phased stabilization project.

Beginning on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 the following areas will be closed off to the public for Phase 2 of the Stabilization Project to be executed.

These closures will be changing as the project progresses and the work area changes.

LOWER LEVEL The lower level will be barricaded off at Embrasure 91 and the closure will extend down Front 4 to the existing closed off Employee Only area at Bastion #3. The flow of traffic will be directed away from Front 4 towards the parade ground through the existing cut through area of the Officers’ Quarters Ruin.

SELF GUIDED TOUR STOPS EFFECTED Due to this closure visitors will not be able to access the Bakery.

UPPER LEVEL The upper level will be barricaded off at Embrasure 91 and the closure will extend down Front 4 to the existing closed off Employee Only area at Bastion #3. There is a self guided tour sign here and at this point traffic will have to turn around and head back towards Bastion #4.

SELF GUIDED TOUR STOPS EFFECTED Due to this closure visitors will not be able to access the Chapel.

TERREPLEIN LEVEL The terreplein level will be barricaded off at the northwest corner of Bastion #4 and the closure will extend down the entire length of Front 4 to the existing closed off area. The flow of traffic coming up the stairs on Bastion #4 will be able to go to the northwest side of the Bastion giving them a view of Loggerhead Key and a view down the face of Front 4. At this point visitors will have to turn around and stay on the path down Front 5 or descend the staircase of Bastion #4.

SELF GUIDED TOUR STOPS EFFECTED There are no tour stops effected by this closure.

These closures will be changing as the project progresses and the work area changes. Please check back for periodic updates!
