Cumberland Gap Tunnel Anniversary

Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel with special programs presented in partnership with the Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority. Throughout the weekend, visitors can join park rangers for guided hikes, an evening program, and behind-the-scenes tunnel tours that explore the history, construction, and lasting impact of this important transportation route, from the Wilderness Road and Old Highway 25E to the tunnel used today.

Programs

Gap Hike

Join a park ranger for a hike through the Historic Cumberland Gap and discover how this important passage through the mountains changed over time. Explore the story of the Wilderness Road, the development of Old Highway 25E, removal of Old Highway 25E and the construction of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. This hike explores the fascinating progression of the Cumberland Gap from trail, to road, and back to trail.

Location: Meet at Thomas Walker parking lot at least 10 minutues before start time.

Evening Program

Discover the history and construction of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel.

Cumberland Gap Tunnel Tours

Get a behind the scenes look at Cumberland Gap Tunnel Operations. Participants will visit the primary operations room, peek inside the tunnel bore, ascend to the top of the tunnel for a scenic view, and more.
