Channel Islands National Park Superintendent Russell Galipeau announces that Santa Rosa Island will reopen for visitation on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. The island was closed to the public from October 26 to November 1, 2016, due to safety concerns associated with drug smuggling activity on the island. On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, federal and local law enforcement personnel recovered 44 bundles of marijuana, weighing nearly 3,000 pounds, on Santa Rosa Island, which were believed to be linked to a maritime smuggling attempt. For the past week, National Park Service rangers have conducted aerial and ground searches and have not found any person(s) that may have been affiliated with the smuggling incident. |
