Channel Islands National Park invites the public to celebrate Kids to Parks Day at an event on May 20, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at the park visitor center in the Ventura Harbor.

This free event, sponsored by the National Park Trust, will feature a meet and greet with the PBS character Nature Cat, as well as showings of select episodes of the TV show Nature Cat, a series designed to spark kids’ interest in exploring the outdoors.

There will also be opportunities to participate in family-friendly activities, ranger-led talks, and the park’s three junior ranger programs, in which children will be able to earn badges as a Channel Islands National Park Junior Ranger, an Underwater Explorer, or a Junior Historic Preservationist.

Activities for children of all ages include button making, fox masks, ocean animal sun catchers, and more. At 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, a park ranger will discuss marine adaptations and ocean stewardship at the center’s marine life exhibit.

Information about the national initiative Every Kid in a Park, which invites all fourth graders to visit their public lands and waters for free, will also be available for parents and children.

About the National Park Service (NPS) Junior Ranger Program
The NPS Junior Ranger Program is an inter-generational family-learning program that engages all members of the family in learning and interacting with parks and the park system. Whether it’s a junior ranger booklet, camp, ranger program, or online program, the goal of generating a lifelong appreciation for our parks can be applied to these programs at all levels.

About Nature Cat
Nature Cat is a PBS Kids television show that follows Fred, a house cat who dreams of exploring the great outdoors. Nature Cat is enthusiastic about outdoor activities, but at times intimidated by them. With the help of his animal friends, Nature Cat finds himself on action-packed adventures, all while inspiring children to go outside and become backyard explorers themselves.
