Over 600 educational technology leaders who serve the K-12 education community throughout the State of California will interact with divers underwater at Channel Islands National Park (CINP) in southern California during a live broadcast at the California Educational Technology Professionals Association (CETPA) conference this Wednesday in Sacramento. The Live Dive interactive program will be broadcast in real time from underwater 14 miles offshore of Ventura, California, to the eager attendees at CETPA in northern California, allowing them to experience a rare glimpse into a seldom-seen marine ecosystem without getting wet. Through this virtual dive the technologists will accompany trained National Park Service divers on an underwater journey into the kelp forest. Channel Islands Live, a distance learning program sponsored by CINP and Ventura County Office of Education, includes interdisciplinary, curriculum-based educational programs and webcam broadcasts. These live events connect students and the public to the remote and spectacular resources of CINP and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. These programs are expected to be available for the public to view via the Internet by next spring. Established through a partnership between the National Park Service and Ventura County Office of Education, Channel Islands Live is an innovative way to bring live science and research to students. The program has exceptional educational importance as research shows that students better understand key science concepts through multimedia and interdisciplinary approaches. This project is part of a larger effort on the part of Ventura County Office of Education to utilize 21st century technology to provide students from throughout the county’s 21 school districts with authentic, place-based learning opportunities that enhance their educational development.
