Upper Rhyolite Trail Closure

Talus Slope Faliure
Talus Slope: a steep slope formed by loose rocks, broken stone, and boulders that have accumulated at the base of a cliff or rock face. Because the material is unstable and can shift or fall, talus slopes may present hazards to visitors.

The Upper Rhyolite Trail is closed due to an unstable slope and the failure of a retaining wall along the trail. Over time, water saturation, freeze-thaw cycles, and underground soil movement have weakened the hillside. These conditions have caused loose rocks, debris, and large boulders to accumulate at the base of the steep slope, creating a potential hazard for visitors.

As a precaution, the trail has been closed to protect public safety until the area can be further evaluated and stabilized.
