April 10, 2024 Record of Determination for Visitor Use Restrictions for the Chiricahua National Monument Centennial Events Pursuant to 36 CFR § 1.5, the National Park Service (NPS) is implementing visitor use restrictions at Chiricahua National Monument on April 17 through April 20, 2024. The temporary restrictions are necessary due to the anticipated increase in visitors and vehicles and heightened safety concerns during the monument’s Centennial Commemoration events. • The Faraway Ranch Parking Area will be closed to all vehicles except those with disability plates or placards from 3:00 pm on April 17ᵗʰ to 6:00 pm on April 19ᵗʰ.
• Vehicles more than 24 feet in length or towing trailers are not permitted in the monument from 3:00 pm on April 17ᵗʰ to 6:00 pm on April 20ᵗʰ. Alternate day parking for oversized vehicles trailers is provided to visitors outside the park with an event shuttle available to transport passengers on April 18ᵗʰ through the 20ᵗʰ. Exception: Vehicles with a confirmed reservation at the Bonita Canyon Campground may proceed directly to the campground to check into their site. • Horses and similar stock animals are not allowed in the monument from 3:00 pm on April 17ᵗʰ to 6:00 pm on April 20ᵗʰ. • The daily 9:00 AM hiker shuttle to Massai Point will not operate on April 18ᵗʰ and April 19ᵗʰ. Additional hiker shuttles will be provided on Saturday, April 20ᵗʰ. Pursuant to 36 CFR § 1.5(b), because there will be no long-term or significant modification in operations, publication as rulemaking in the Federal Register is unnecessary and unwarranted. This determination is consistent with past partial and temporary park closures or public use limitations in the NPS Intermountain Region. Pursuant to 36 CFR § 1.7, notice of the closure will be made through physical posting, electronic communication, and by park staff direction. This Record of Determination is available upon request.
