Incorporate Chiricahua National Monument into your class curriculum! The park is an excellent outdoor classroom to learn about geology, wildlife, habitats, and the history of the region. All programs are free and designed to meet Arizona state curriculum standards.
Habitat Adventures
Grades 1-6 | 2.5 hours
Guided by our senses, students explore Bonita Canyon on this 1.5-mile hike beginning at Bonita Creek Campground and ending at Faraway Ranch Picnic Area. Where do animals live and why? How are their needs similar to what people need? We will seek clues from some park "residents" such as deer, wild turkey, and coati while discussing plant and animal adaptations. Students will also be able to explore the grounds of Faraway Ranch and learn about the early human history of the park.
A Wonderland of Rocks
Grades 2-5 | 2.5 hours
Geologists are like detectives who look at rocks to understand and appreciate the world around them. On this field trip, students will learn about the geologic forces that formed, and continue to shape, the spectacular rock pinnacles of Chiricahua National Monument through hands-on activities such as rock sorting and classifying, recording observations, and going on a short hike.
