During the Civil War, many families lost their homes and farms, engulfed by terrible battles. Families on Chickamauga battlefield felt this type of loss as well. For the Snodgrass family, the fighting drove them from their home on Sept 19, 1863. As Confederate forces assaulted Horseshoe Ridge, on the afternoon of September 20, scores fell on the slopes of Snodgrass Hill, and Battery I, 4th US Artillery contributed to this slaughter. Despite mounting losses, the men continued to work their guns in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Join park rangers and volunteers for an artillery firing demonstration and to hear the tale of the 4th US Artillery's action on Horseshoe Ridge.
