Small egg shaped body, plump, with pointed snout and a fold of skin across the back of the head. Skin smooth and reddish brown to dark gray. May have light colored stripes along sides of body. Mottled belly. Single spade on each hind foot. Male has dark colored throat.

2.2 to 3.8 cm long (¾" to 1 ½")

Reproduction

Breeds April to October right after rains.

Habitat

Tends to hide under debris or decaying vegetation near the edge of water bodies; ponds, ditches, etc. Can burrow quickly into leaf litter or loose soil.

Behavior

Nocturnal.

Voice

Call is a vibrant bleat sometimes with a short preliminary peep; the call lasts ½ to 4 seconds. Call has been likened to the bleat of a lamb or an electric buzzer.
