The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA)’s Natural Resource Program conducts an annual census of Georgia aster Symphyotrichum georgianum on park lands. In 2013, we counted over 4,000 Georgia aster stems; nearly double the previous record counted in 2012. CRNRA has worked closely for many years with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and the Georgia Power Company on the protection, management, and enhancement of Georgia aster in and around the park. It was through these collaborative efforts that the park has been able to document a significant increase in the numbers of Georgia aster plants in recent years. The signing of the Candidate Conservation Agreement highlights the positive effects of the collaborative efforts, but it is important not to downplay the vulnerability of this species to disturbance and the threats that still influence the survival of this species. CRNRA looks forward to working with all partners of the Candidate Conservation Agreement to ensure the survival of this species in the years to come.
