Harkers Island, N.C. – Cape Lookout National Seashore will reopen the Harkers Island Visitor Center and beaches to limited day-use.
The following areas are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, October 2:
- Harkers Island Visitor Center will resume regular hours of operation from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- North Core Banks, South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks will reopen to private vessels and foot traffic and day-use.
- No facilities are available on the islands.
- Islands remain closed to vehicle traffic and camping at this time
The Beaufort Visitor Information Center, located in Beaufort Town Hall, reopened on Thursday, September 27.
Facilities will reopen as grounds and structures are stabilized and deemed safe for the public. The category one storm which lingered over the area for several days caused island washover and facility damages including docks, waterways, and visitor camp cabins.
Park staff will also be offering their first interpretive presentation since the storm hit, pending resumption of ferry operations by the Island Express Ferry Service. On Saturday, October 6, “Horse Sense and Survival” will be presented by Horse Biologist Sue Stuska. Reservations are required and space is limited.
