HARKERS ISLAND, NC Harkers Island, NC - Cape Lookout National Seashore, in conjunction with the National Safe Boating Council, celebrates National Boating Week from Saturday, May 19 through Friday, May 25, 2018.

The park encourages the local boating community to wear a life jacket, which is the simplest life-saving strategy for recreational water enthusiasts. Life jackets are available for every boating activity, with various styles of life jackets on the market to fit everyone’s needs.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2016 Recreational Boating Statistics (the latest record of reported boating accidents in the U.S.):

  • 80% of boating deaths were due to drowning
  • 83% of those victims were NOT wearing a life jacket
  • Two-thirds of all drowning victims are good swimmers
Boaters can also ensure a safe, fun experience on the water by taking a boater safety class, which is an excellent way to learn about being responsible on the water. Topics may include appropriate safety gear and procedures, understanding water conditions and weather, along with boat handling. In-class learning, and on-water training can empower students with confidence and skills to operate a boat safely.
