HARKERS ISLAND, NC – Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent, Jeff West, announces the opening of a refurbished, self-service restroom facility at Wade Shore on Shackleford Banks.
The park placed emphasis into rejuvenating the run-down structure out of necessity due to the high volume of visitors who enjoy visiting Wade Shore, one of the most popular beach destinations in the park. Improvements to the restroom include renovated bathroom floors, toilets, and roof. Also, the boardwalk and railing leading to the restrooms have been rehabilitated for future use and visitor safety.
With its wild and scenic resources, Shackleford Banks is currently a proposed wilderness area, and a ‘trash-free zone’, meaning visitors must pack out their own trash. The upgraded restroom will be operated in a similar fashion, as a visitor-maintained facility with minimal park upkeep on a regular schedule. Visitors should plan ahead by bringing their own toilet paper and pack out any trash they generate in order to keep the beaches of Shackleford Banks in pristine condition.
The park hopes visitors from near and far will enjoy their time at the beach while visiting Wade Shore, and beyond, along the 56-miles of the national seashore. For more park information, including planning your visit to the park, please visit our website at www.nps.gov/calo.
