Harkers Island, NC –Cape Lookout National Seashore remains closed to the public due to Hurricane Matthew (in accordance with 36CFR 1.5). This decision is to ensure the safety and protection of the public, park staff, and facilities.

Eastern North Carolina has been impacted by Hurricane Matthew. Overnight the eye of storm passed about 40 miles off of Cape Lookout. The area experience high winds, coastal flooding and high rainfall. Carteret County has directed people to stay off the roads while debris is removed and powerlines are fixed.

Our highest priority at this time is ensuring that park employees are safe. As the weather clears and conditions are deemed safe for travel, assessment of the park will begin.

Reservations at Great Island and Long Point Cabins for Monday, October 10 are canceled. Reservations beyond Monday night are on hold pending a decision on the outcome of the assessments of the park. Reservations canceled due to weather will be issued a full refund.

The National Park Service will issue advisories and post updates as needed on the park website (www.nps.gov/calo) and via Facebook and Twitter at twitter.com/CapeLookoutNPS.
