Harkers Island, NC –The Harkers Island Visitor Center (HIVC) and Beaufort Visitor Information Center (BVIC) at Cape Lookout National Seashore have re-opened as of Noon today. However, all island locations will remain closed for the duration of Saturday, September 3, as park staff conduct limited park assessments today, dependent on conditions. Tropical Storm Hermine has passed over the southern Outer Banks, but we expect to keep getting significant rain, localized flooding, wind, high surf, and beach erosion, impacts throughout today. These impacts, particularly high surf, rip currents, and beach erosion, are expected to continue into the middle of next week. Visitor and employee safety are key priorities. Initial information indicates that the park received limited storm damage, to date. Decisions on re-opening all island locations will be discussed later today. For more information, check the park website at www.nps.gov/calo and via Facebook and Twitter at twitter.com/CapeLookoutNPS.
