HARKERS ISLAND, NC–Cape Lookout National Seashore has been named the Best National Park Beach of 2016, according to a USA TODAY readers' choice contest. "The beaches of Cape Lookout National Seashore are truly special places and we are very excited to see such strong public support," said Superintendent Pat Kenney. Nominees for this category were chosen by a panel of relevant experts which include a combination of editors from USA TODAY, editors from 10Best.com, relevant expert contributors, and sources for both these media and other Gannett media properties. All voting is digital and the 10Best Readers' Choice Award contest is accessible on the 10Best.com website. According to Superintendent Kenney, "It is extra special for Cape Lookout National Seashore to be selected as 'Best National Park Beach' since we are also celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the park and the National Park Service (NPS) Centennial. We hope the public will come out and visit the 'Best National Park Beach'!" On June 18, 2016, the National Park Service will be hosting a day celebration for the 50th Anniversary and the NPS Centennial. The day will include kids' activities, a formal ceremony featuring the winners of the Diamond in the Rough Student Art Contest, and Ranger-led opportunities taking place over the entire weekend. National parks, including Cape Lookout National Seashore, will celebrate the NPS Centennial throughout 2016 with special events and activities taking place at various times in the year.
