HARKERS ISLAND, NC –Superintendent Pat Kenney is pleased to announce that Cape Lookout National Seashore is celebrating its 49th anniversary today. Established by President Johnson, the 56 miles of wild and beautiful shoreline within Cape Lookout National Seashore has been a favorite recreational location for generations. Today the park protects more than a recreational area; it also protects wildlife nursery areas on its wide, sweeping beaches and in its thriving salt marshes. The undeveloped beaches in the seashore not only provide the darkness needed for nesting sea turtles but also great opportunities for sky gazing in some of the darkest skies along the East Coast. Come celebrate this national treasure in your backyard by visiting the islands within the seashore for a day of shelling, fishing or just relaxing. Stay overnight and catch a glimpse of the Milky Way as you camp on the beach or stay in one of the rustic cabins. There are many ways to enjoy Cape Lookout National Seashore today and for many years to come. For more information contact Cape Lookout National Seashore at 252-728-2250.
