HARKERS ISLAND, NC –The islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore have many rarely heard stories to tell.One of these seldom heard stories is the Confederate Army attempt in 1864 to destroy the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Cape Lookout National Seashore will be remembering the events of April 3, 1864 through Ranger-led interpretive programs.Come and hear about this bold raid by Confederate soldiers inside the Federal lines.The lighthouse will be open for special tours to see the still visible damage resulting from the raid.

Thursday, April 3- Evening Program –The Raid on the Lighthouse

Free, 7:00 PM, North Carolina Maritime Museum Auditorium in Beaufort, NC

Spies, beautiful ladies and adaring raid by a small band of Confederate soldiers – come join National Park Service Ranger Karen Duggan to hear about the Confederate Army's attempt to destroy the Cape Lookout lighthouse the night of April 3, 1864. Try your hand at historic research as we take a close look at the people and events that played a role in this audacious affair.

Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 – Civil War History Lighthouse Tours

Tour and Ferry Reservations required, Fee for Climbing and the Ferry

Cape Lookout National Seashore will open the Cape Lookout Lighthouse for special Civil War history tours as part of the remembrance of the Confederate raid on the lighthouse in 1864. The tours will culminate in a guided climb up the historic lighthouse.

Tours will be offered at 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30 a.m. and at 12:00, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. On Sunday, April 6, tours will be offered at 12:30, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, and 2:30 p.m. Each tour is limited to 10 people; so reservations are required.To reserve your climb time, please call Cape Lookout National Seashore at 252-728-2250 extension 3001, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, from Monday, March 31 through Friday, April 4.

The fee for the program is the cost of Lighthouse climb tickets which are: $8.00 per person for adults, $4.00 for seniors 62 and older, and $4.00 for children 12 and under.Children must be at least 44 inches tall to climb the lighthouse.

Transportation from the Harkers Island Visitor Center to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse is not included in the program fee.If you are riding the ferry to take part in this tour, ferry reservations are required.Ferry reservations may be made by calling Island Express Ferry Service at 252-728-RIDE (7433).

The cost of roundtrip ferry transportation from the Harkers Island Visitor Center to the lighthouse is $15 for adults,and $8 for children (11 and under)
