Harkers Island, NC - Superintendent Pat Kenney announced that Cape Lookout National Seashore (the park) has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Passenger Ferry Facilities at the Harkers Island Visitor Center. This project continues the park's plans to establish passenger ferry service from Harkers Island to Shackleford Banks and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse on South Core Banks, as called for in the park's 2008 Commercial Services Plan. In August 2011, the National Park Service also selected a site in the Town of Beaufort for the second passenger ferry departure site. Although existing Harkers Island Visitor Center facilities will be utilized for the ferry service, the EA will evaluate proposed facility improvements and amenities that would prepare the site for use by a contracted ferry concessioner and ferry passengers. The park is inviting public comments on the EA from February 25, 2013 until March 27, 2013.Comments may be made by mail and on-line.
