HARKERS ISLAND, NC - On Tuesday, October 30, 2012, Cape Lookout National Seashore completed an assessment of the seashore for public safety concerns and damage to park facilities, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The seashore is pleased to announce the following opening schedule:

  • The Harkers Island Visitor Center will open Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 9:00 AM for regular hours (The Soundside Nature Trail remains closed due to erosion)
  • The seashore will be open for pedestrian use beginning at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, October 31, 2012
  • The seashore will open for vehicle use beginning on Thursday, November 1, 2012; vehicle ferry service will run as scheduled starting at 9:00 AM
  • Great Island and Long Point cabin use lodging will be open beginning at check-in time at 1:00 PM on Thursday, November 1,2012

Individuals and groups who held reservations for cabins at Great Island and Long Point for any day from Friday, October 26 through Wednesday, October 31, 2012, will receive full refunds for thosereservations. If anyone has questions about reservations, please contact Cathy Frazier at 252-728-2250, extension 3020.

HARKERS ISLAND, NC - Cape Lookout National Seashore is pleased to announce the reopening of the Harkers Island Visitor Center on Wednesday, October 31, 2012. The Harkers Island Visitor Center will return to normal operations on Wednesday and is open from 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. The Soundside Nature Trail behind the Harkers Island Visitor Center is closed due to safety concerns from debris and erosion.

All other areas within Cape Lookout National Seashore will remain closed at least through Wednesday.Seashore staff are performing a full assessment of the 56-mile seashore on Tuesday, October 30,2012, continuing into Wednesday, October 31 as needed, to identify public safety hazards and potential damage to park facilities and to correct concerns that can be expeditiously resolved.

Based on a preliminary assessment performed on Monday afternoon, and contingent on Tuesday's full assessment, the earliest the seashore anticipates re-opening the islands is Thursday afternoon, November 1, 2012.

Individuals and groups who held reservations for cabins at Great Island and Long Point for any dayfrom Friday, October 26 through Wednesday, October 31, 2012, will receive full refunds for those reservations.If additional nights are closed, visitors will automatically receive refunds for those nights.
