Harkers Island, N.C. -- Acting Superintendent Mike Tranel announced 4 new special event programs to be held at Cape Lookout National Seashore. These programs will take place at the Harkers Island Visitor Center and the adjacent Shell Point picnic area. These programs are designed to involve children and their families. Scouts, home-school groups, and other organizations are asked to call ahead to help us plan for your group.

For more information on these programs and other program offerings, call the Harkers Island Visitor Center at (252) 728-2250 for a complete schedule.

Junior Ranger Day: April 17, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Experience the seashore through Ranger led programs and earn limited edition Junior Ranger Day items such as patches, badges and certificates as you learn about the plants, animals and people who have weathered the storms of Cape Lookout.  Activities will include Kite Flying, Surf Rescue Drills, exploring Law Enforcement vehicles, Shell and Bone identification and seashore crafts.

Take Your Parent Outside Day: June 18, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Are you looking for some activities that you can do as a family?  Then make plans to come to the Harkers Island Visitor Center and learn some fun outdoor family oriented activities.  Bird Watching, Fishing, and Kayaking are great family activities that the whole family can enjoy.  The entire family is welcome but there are some age restrictions for the Learn to Kayak portion.

Your National Park Day: August 20, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
National park sites belong to all Americans and they are established for the enjoyment of present and future generations.  Caring for these special places is a responsibility shared by different types of park employees as well as you, the park visitor.  After role playing and learning about the various park jobs, find out what you can do to help protect the national parks through fun and games.

Critters of the Night: October 29, 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
When the sun sets and many creatures are going to sleep, others are just waking up. Discover some of the mysterious animals which make the park come alive in the dark of the night. View live animals in exhibits and look for them during the Night Hike. Critter named constellations will also be viewed through telescopes.
