Cabin Reservations Open for 2012

Harkers Island, NC - Cape Lookout National Seashore plans to open Great Island and Long Point cabins on Friday, March 16, 2012, and operate them until Friday, November 30, 2012. Visitors can start making reservations on January 5 at 10 a.m. (EST).

In an effort to improve customer service, the National Park Service will be utilizing recreation.gov for reservations this season. According to Superintendent Pat Kenney, "We are moving to recreation.gov in response to input from visitors about our current reservation system. Recreation.gov will allow our visitors to have the ability to make reservations at their convenience."

Recreation.gov is a national service that was created as part of the Recreation One-Stop E-Gov initiative. The system provides a single point of access to information about Federal recreational activities and reservations. It provides a comprehensive source of information about thousands of Federal recreation opportunities.

Recreation.gov allows for visitors to make reservations online at www.recreation.gov or by calling: 1-877-444-6777. The on-line service is available 24 hours a day. The telephone service is available 10:00 AM EST - 10:00 PM EST from November 1 - February 28 and 10:00 AM EST - Midnight EST from March 1 - October 31. The system will require payment for reservations up front and does have cancelation policies and fees (See the reservation policies section of the website.) Recreation.gov allows visitors to create an account at any time, which will allow them to log on and expedite making reservations on January 5, 2012.

Payment with a credit card will be required at the time of the reservation. Recreation.gov accepts the following major credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

To assist in the transition, the former cabin reservation lines will remain active to answer questions. However reservations will not be taken on these lines. Call the National Park Service at [phone], or [phone], from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday after January 5, 2012, for questions regarding the cabins. 

"The transition to recreation.gov is in direct response to public input we have received" according to Superintendent Kenney. "We welcome your feedback on the new system, since we are always seeking to improve our customer service."

How to Access and Navigate Recreation.gov

Go to www.Recreation.gov, on the left hand side under the "Interested in" drop down box, select "camping & lodging", under "Looking for", select "cabins", in the "Where" box type Long Point Cape Lookout NC or Great Island Cape Lookout NC, then hit search, and it will take you to the main page.

Hit the "Check availability" button, and follow the directions.
