Cape Lookout Announces Summer Positions Available

Harkers Island, North Carolina. Cape Lookout National Seashore announces the beginning of its summer hiring process. Cape Lookout National Seashore hires 20 or more summer seasonal workers each year, working both full time and part time hours. Positions are announced online, beginning the week of November 15, at https://www.USAJobs.gov. Most job applications close December 10, 2010. You generally have about 21 days to submit your application online, and it must be completed by the closing date of the announcement.

For the 2011 Summer Season, starting in late March and ending in late September, the available positions are:

  • Park Ranger, Interpretation – Interpretation staff may be called Park Rangers or Park Guides. They work in the park’s visitor centers, at the Lighthouse and provide information to visitors and educational programs to school groups. Positions may be hired for full time, part-time (3-4 days a week), and interim (as needed). Positions at the GS-0090-03/01 to GS-0025/0090-05/01 level pay $11.95 to $15.00 per hour.
  • Biological Science Technician – Monitors activity and takes actions to protect shorebirds, sea turtles and other wildlife within Cape Lookout National Seashore. Protected wildlife include threatened and endangered species. Positions at the GS-0404-05/01 level pay $15.00 per hour.
  • Park Ranger, Protection (Law Enforcement) – Applicants must have completed a National Park Service (NPS) approved seasonal law enforcement training program and/or have possessed a NPS Type 1 or Type 2 law enforcement commission within the last three years. Protection positions at the GS-0025-05/01 level pay $18.50 per hour.

The application period for summer jobs with the National Park Service, often referred to as seasonal positions, starts long before summer comes. If you are interested in a seasonal or temporary position with Cape Lookout National Seashore this coming summer, now is the time to apply.

Summer positions can last up to six months, depending on seasonal workload requirements. Other positions offered may last all year on a part-time or interim (as needed) basis, making these a perfect “fill-in” job for local area residents.

Starting dates are varied to meet the needs of the position. Some positions require specific knowledge, skills, abilities or certifications. Position requirements will be listed in the Job announcement specific to that job and pay grade.
