Advisory Notice for Hurricane Sandy

HARKERS ISLAND, NC -Cape Lookout National Seashore has initiated the park's Hurricane Plan in anticipation of the approach of Hurricane Sandy.Based on the Thursday, October 25, 2012 NOAA Hurricane Center tracking data, which places the track of Hurricane Sandy off of the North Carolina Coast, Cape Lookout National Seashore will remain open to the public.

However, due to the large size of Hurricane Sandy, tropical storm to hurricane force winds are expected across the Outer Banks of North Carolina beginning Saturday and continuing through Monday. For Cape Lookout, this entails about 30 hours of tropical storm force winds.Maximum sustained winds of 50-70 mph are forecast for the Outer Banks.

Vehicle ferries will stop taking visitors to the islands effective Friday, October 26, and will focus on removing visitors that wish to leave.Vehicle and passenger ferries are expected to stop operating on Saturday and may notresume operation until further notice.

Visitor Centers on the islands will close Saturday and will remain closed until Monday.Visitors are advised against heading out to theislands from Saturday, October 27, through Monday, October 29;visitors already staying in the cabins or on the beaches are being advised leave the islands or to seek areas that are protected from overwash.
