Harkers Island, N.C. -- Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Russel J. Wilson announced the dates for the 2008 summer and autumn ranger-led horse watching field trips at Cape Lookout National Seashore. Trips are Friday, June 20, from Harkers Island; Tuesday, July 15, from Morehead City; Saturday, September 6, from Beaufort; and Saturday, November 22, also from Beaufort. “Every trip is different,” observes Wildlife Biologist Dr. Sue Stuska. “We walk in deep sand and over uneven terrain for long distances to find the horses, but it’s worth the hike.” Participants look for subtle horse communication and watch for stallion conflicts. Topics covered include everything from herd dynamics to where the horses find fresh drinking water. The guided trips are free but reservations are required. Reservations are made by calling the park at (252) 728-2250, ext. 3001, or e-mailing e-mail us. Detailed information on the trips is also available by telephone and e-mail. The herd on Shackleford Banks is cooperatively managed by the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc., and Cape Lookout National Seashore. |
