Harkers Island, North Carolina. Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Bob Vogel announces that Harkers Island Visitor Center bookstore has been expanded and updated as part of the Visitor Center renovation that was recently completed in January. We hope that you will come and visit the new store.
The bookstore offers adult and children’s books on many seashore topics such as: the sea, ocean/barrier island creatures, nature guides and nature study, pirates and ghosts, fishing, canoeing and local outer banks history. Also offered are prints, maps and other educational materials. The bookstore is operated by Eastern National, a park service non-profit partner; proceeds from all sales assist the park service with educational programs.
New Books- Women’s History Month
- Silent Spring, 40th Anniversary Edition, by Rachel Carson. When published in 1962, this book helped alert the public and legislators to the dangers of chemical pesticides such as DDT to the environment and to people. This book has been regarded as a landmark in the field of environmental protection.
- The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson. First published in 1951, it is a study of the natural history of the world’s oceans. This book was the recipient of the National Book Award and the John Burroughs Medal.
- The Edge of the Sea by Rachel Carson. First published in 1955, this book examines life along rocky shores, sandy beaches, and coral reefs. The patterns of shore life and the types of plants and animals inhabiting these regions are discussed. Scattered throughout the book are drawings of some of the inhabitants found in these regions.
- Rachel Carson: Pioneer of Ecology by Kathleen V. Kudlinski. This is part of the Women of Our Time Series designed to educate young readers about the lives and work of influential women pioneers.
- Women Who Kept the Lights by Mary Louis Clifford and J. Candice Clifford. This work details the careers of 32 intrepid women who were official keepers of light stations on the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific Coasts, on Lake Champlain and the Great Lakes, staying at their posts for periods ranging from a few years to half a century.

- Whaling on the North Carolina Coast by Marcus B. Simpson, Jr. and Sallie W. Simpson. This book traces the history of the whaling industry of the North Carolina Coast, with notable attention on Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks, from the late 17th Century until its demise near the turn of the 20th Century.
- The Old North State Fact Book, published by the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. This book contains information on the history of our state, with special emphasis on the politics and government of North Carolina. It also contains information on many of our state’s symbols. It is great for students!
- Guide to Sea Kayaking in North Carolina: The Best Day Trips and Tours from Currituck to Cape Fear by Pam Malec. This book contains details and descriptions of 35 trips for various skill levels, and it offers information on the trip durations for each site, how to plan for the trip, tidal information, and notes of caution.
