Harkers Island, NC. Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Bob Vogel announces that a seven month old filly and a nine month old filly were removed from Shackleford Banks in early March. Veterinarians provided mild sedatives and the youngsters were transported by boat to the mainland.

Foal and yearling removal is part of the management strategy that keeps the number of horses on Shackleford Banks between 110 and 130. The herd now numbers 115, with approximately seven foals expected in 2007. The two youngsters were chosen for removal because their family lines are well represented on the island.

Removed foals are available for adoption. For information and/or an adoption application contact Anita Kimball at (252) 241-5222 or, after 6:00 p.m., Joy Lawrence at (252) 728-7111. To make an appointment to see the horses, contact Anita Kimball.

The herd on Shackleford Banks is cooperatively managed by the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc., and Cape Lookout National Seashore.
