Harkers Island, North Carolina. Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Russel J. Wilson announces that the emergency contract issued to the Morris Marina Kabin Kamps and Ferry Service, Inc. of Atlantic, North Carolina, to operate the ferry from Davis to Great Island and cabin rentals at Great Island expired on December 31, 2007.
The term of the emergency contract issued to the Morris Marina Kabin Kamps and Ferry Service, Inc. to operate the Davis to Great Island ferry and cabin lodging services was limited to three years, and by law this type of contract cannot be renewed. As a result, the National Park Service will be soliciting for a new interim ferry service provider until a long-term ferry contract can be developed and a new long-term operator chosen.
“The National Park Service is working diligently to ensure that ferry service from Davis to Great Island and that Great Island cabin rentals will not be interrupted in 2008,” states Wilson. “As soon as the operator is selected for this season, we will announce the new reservation information for Davis to Great Island ferry and Great Island cabins. We understand that winter/spring is the time that many folks traditionally confirm plans for the summer and fall fishing season, and we hope that everyone will be patient as we work to select a new operator for South Core Banks.”
It is important to note that expiration of the emergency contract for the Davis to Great Island run DOES NOT effect operation of the Atlantic, North Carolina, to Long Point vehicle ferry currently operated Morris Marina Kabin Kamps and Ferry Service, Inc. Reservations for the Atlantic to Long Point ferry and Long Point cabins can be made as usual by calling 877-956-6568.
The National Park Service appreciates the services to the public provided by the staff of Morris Marina Kabin Kamps and Ferry Service and the Great Island Cabins and Ferry Service as the interim operator of the Davis to Great Island ferry and Great Island cabin lodging during the three years of the emergency contract.
