The Susquehanna River is Pennsylvania's major tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. While John Smith did not sail very far up the Susquehanna River during his 1608 voyages, the Chesapeake Trail extends the river's entire length to reflect important Indigenous trade routes. The Susquehanna is the Chesapeake Bay’s largest tributary, providing 50% of the fresh water that flows into the Bay. With most of Pennsylvania falling within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, there are a variety of opportunities for recreation both on water and on land within the state.
