Cindy Hawse was located by a National Park Service-led team at approximately 1:35 pm today (Monday, October 6) at a location about ¼ mile north of the nearest established trail. She is in good condition and had apparently suffered no ill-effects from her night in the rough country in this part of the park. Ms. Hawse, a Tennessee resident, was visiting the park with a group and was reported missing early Sunday morning. Approximately 40 searchers were on the ground Sunday with the search suspended at nightfall. On Monday approximately 45 searchers combed the steep slopes, bluffs, and caves in the Cecil Creek area looking for signs of the missing youth. One of the returning searchers stated: "That is some seriously rough country, but the job is its own reward!" While the search and rescue was in progress, a Red Cross worker suffered a heart attack and was airlifted by helicopter to NorthArk Medical Center for treatment. The Red Cross team was delivering food to the search teams at the incident command location at the Erbie Horsecamp. In addition to Buffalo National River Search & Rescue, assistance came from Arkansas Forestry Commission, Compton Volunteer Fire Department, Mennonite Disaster Services Search & Rescue, NorthArk Medical Center Ambulance, and Tri-County Search & Rescue. As always, the National Park Service is grateful for the support and assistance of all the volunteer groups dedicated to providing professional services in the aid of visitors and residents in distress. |
