Booker T. Washington Visitor Center

At the visitor center, park rangers and volunteers are available to answer your questions and help you make the most of your visit.

The Booker T. Washington Visitor Center is located near the main entrance of the monument, just off Virginia 122S. The visitor center provides maps, schedules of programs and events, and junior ranger booklets for children. The museum store, operated by America’s National Parks, offers books and items focused on Washington's life.

 

The visitor center features two large-format circular exhibits depicting Booker T. Washington's early life. He was born into slavery in April 1856 on the 207-acre tobacco farm owned by James Burroughs.

Washington's formative years are explored through artifacts, photographs, and documents that illustrate the experience of growing up enslaved in the mid-1800s. Interactive displays offer experiential learning opportunities that immerse visitors in Booker T. Washington's early life.
