On March 31, 2014, Sherry Fritschi, a 19-year federal employee who has worked at the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area since 2000, will retire from her position as an Interpretive Park Ranger. Sherry started her federal service at the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1988 and has worked at Shenandoah National Park, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and at the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. Since arriving at Big South Fork, Sherry has worked in both Kentucky at the Blue Heron District and at Bandy Creek in Tennessee.

"Sherry has been a valuable member of the Big South Fork staff and has offered warm smiles and greetings to thousands of park visitors over the years," says Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas.  "She takes joy in sharing her knowledge about the park and assures that each person can find their own connection to its resources.  I know I speak for the entire staff when I say that Sherry will be greatly missed as we congratulate her on her retirement and a job well done."

In addition to spending time with her husband, Sherry plans to devote more of her time to writing.  In particular, Sherry is interested in continuing a children's book that has been a personal project over the past years, "Once I retire, I'll have the time to dedicate to my writing skills.  I'm determined to get my book published." The book will be an adventure story that takes place on the Cumberland Plateau in the 1940s.
