Temporary permits are now available to collect downed firewood along roadsides at the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Due to the recent February ice storm, there is significant available downed wood in road corridors in certain areas of the park.

Permit holders will be authorized to remove downed firewood only along roadsides (within 20 feet of road). The permits will be for personal use only and not for resale. Downed wood may be collected only during daylight hours and absolutely no use of chainsaws and no cutting of standing timber.

Permits can be obtained in person at the park headquarters at 4564 Leatherwood Road, Oneida, or at the Bandy Creek Visitor Center Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.(ET). There is no charge for the permits which are valid for a maximum of 60 days. For more information, call (423) 569-9778.
