Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, in partnership with the Big South Fork Mountain Biking Club, will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of the Kentucky mountain bike trail on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 28.  The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. EDT at the Ledbetter Trailhead.  After the ceremony, mountain bike riders are encouraged to try out the newly updated ten mile trail system that will connect riders to many other trail options.  Users of this trail can pick loops up to 33.8 mile in length or have the option of a shorter distance 16 mile loop.  This trail system has moderate to advanced level terrain with access to multiple trailheads.

This newly updated bike trail is an excellent addition to the Big South Fork which has recently been honored as an international mountain biking destination by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA).  "This ribbon cutting ceremony on National Public Lands Day is one way to show appreciation for all the volunteers who helped with the trail work over this past year," said Niki Stephanie Nicholas, Superintendent.  National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event in which eight federal agencies as well as other groups partner together to maintain and protect public lands.

Visitors can access the Ledbetter Trailhead location by following directions to the Bald Knob-Hill Cemetery Road on the Kentucky side of the park.  Directions start from Hwy. 27 south of Whitley City at the intersection of KY-92 West.  Head west on KY-92 toward Cabin Creek Road (6.4 miles).  Turn left onto Yamacraw-Bell Farm Road (2.3 miles).  Turn left onto Beech Grove Road/Devils Creek Road/Rock Creek Road (1.3 miles).  Keep right to continue on Beech Grove Road/Devils Creek Road (2.6 miles).  Take a slight right to stay on Beech Grove Road/Devils Creek Road.  Continue to follow Beech Grove Road (0.9 mile).  Turn left onto Bald Knob-Hill Cemetery Road (1.5 miles).
