Vandalism to the trailhead facilities at the Mt. Helen Trailhead, located in the southern portion of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, was recently discovered by National Park Service staff. Damage occurred to the trailhead bulletin board and trail directional signs. Although these items had no value to the vandals, much costly damage was done, requiring expensive repairs. Big South Fork Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas said that money from other projects will now have to be used to repair the senseless destruction.
Superintendent Nicholas went on to say that National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers will increase the frequency of patrols in this area. Anyone caught destroying public property will be prosecuted. With the help of concerned citizens this action may be prevented in the future. Area citizens are asked to report any suspicious or destructive behavior. If local residents would like to set up a watch program, they are encouraged to contact Howard Duncan at (423) 569-9778. The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.
