Stearns: Michigan Pine King and Kentucky Coal Baron, 1845-1933. Mr. Nagle will present a brief talk on the subject of his new biography, Justus S. Stearns, namesake of the town of Stearns on Sunday, November 15, at 1:30 p.m. (ET) in the Stearns Depot in Stearns, Kentucky. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of Mr. Nagle's new book. Michael Nagle's book addresses key events in the first few decades of Stearns' life and his initial foray into the lumber industry. Subsequent chapters explore Stearns' political career, his timber operations in Wisconsin, and his coal, lumber, and railroad operations in Kentucky and Tennessee. Nagle also details the ancillary businesses that Stearns founded or purchased in the early twentieth century, even as his Stearns Salt & Lumber Company served as the anchor of his Michigan holdings, while Stearns Coal & Lumber did the same for his operations in Kentucky. Plan to attend this free event to hear stories about Justice S. Stearns and his remarkable achievements in McCreary County and throughout the region. The event is cosponsored by the National Park Service, the McCreary County Museum, and the Whistle Stop Café.
