The National Park Service in cooperation with the Army Corps of Engineers has developed an Environmental Assessment for the Remediation of Selected Contaminated Mine Drainage Sites in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in McCreary County, Kentucky. The proposed reclamation sites are located near Blue Heron. The purpose of the document is to analyze the impacts to park resources as a result of contaminated mine drainage remediation. Contaminated mine remediation would help improve water quality and aquatic habitat in the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River.

The public comment period begins on Monday, June 20 and will continue through Wednesday, July 20, 2016. The Environmental Assessment can be viewed online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/CMDEA and on the park’s website at https://www.nps.gov/biso/learn/management/publicinvolvement.htm. A hard copy will also be available at the McCreary County Library, or a hard copy can be requested from Park Headquarters at [phone]. 

A public briefing session on this project will be held at the National Park Service Stearns Ranger Station on Thursday, June 30, 2016, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm (ET).
