Oneida, Tennessee – Blue Heron, an integral part of the history of Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area is calling on surrounding communities to help preserve and showcase the region’s mining heritage.Park staff have begun the process of designing fresh new signage for the area. Current Blue Heron signage have been in place for approximately 30 years, and in need of replacing due to wear and tear, and the natural degradation process over such an extended period of time.
Photographs of people, families, and friends that show life around the historic Stearns mining company town are sought after, and of particular importance. Specifically, photographs of Stearns mining operations and daily life activity from the early to mid-1900s are needed.
Community members are invited to bring their original photos to Blue Heron on Saturday, August 16, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM (ET), where staff will scan the images on-site and return them immediately. High-resolution scans will be used to help determine whether the photos can be printed for display. Photograph owners will be asked to sign a form that authorizes the National Park Service to use the image in waysides and other materials.
The Park is specifically looking for images that may be suitable for large-format printing to enhance a refreshed exhibit that tells the story of life in the coal mining town of Blue Heron. These personal moments offer a powerful glimpse into the spirit and community of Blue Heron’s past.
