![]() Hunting and fishing have long been cherished traditions in this remote and untamed region of Florida. For generations, sportspeople have not only enjoyed the challenge and reward of the sport but have also played a pivotal role in the protection and stewardship of the natural landscape. Their deep connection to the area and respect for its ecosystems helped ensure that this unique corner of wild Florida remained preserved and valued. Today, as protected within our enabling legislation, regulated hunting and fishing continues to be an important recreational activity within the Preserve. The area offers seasonal hunting opportunities for archery, muzzleloading, and general gun, each with its own designated timeframe and rules to ensure sustainability and safety. Game species commonly pursued include white-tailed deer, wild turkey and wild hog. The Preserve also offers opportunities for year-round fishing in the lakes, rivers, and canals in the Preserve's boundaries. In Big Cypress, hook-and-line fishing for native and exotic fish is allowed, while other methods such as bow fishing or castnetting are not allowed within our boundary lines. While hunting is permitted for many species, alligator hunting is strictly prohibited within the boundaries of the national preserve to safeguard this iconic Florida species and maintain ecological balance. The continued preservation of wildlife and natural habitats is a priority, and hunting/fishing regulations are carefully crafted with conservation in mind. Managed Partnership for SustainabilityHunting and fishing within the Preserve is managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. This cooperative approach ensures that hunting/fishing activities align with conservation goals, park regulations, and wildlife population health. Sportspeople are encouraged to stay informed about the latest guidelines and permit requirements before planning their trips. Please note that regulations change annually. Whether you're an experienced sportsperson or a newcomer eager to learn, the Preserve offers a responsibly managed space to connect with nature, practice outdoor skills, and contribute to the legacy of conservation-minded hunting and fishing. |
