OCHOPEE, Fla. – The National Fire remains active as persistent drought conditions and widespread frost-killed vegetation continue to create an unusually heavy and highly receptive fuel bed. Ground crews continue to conduct defensive firing operations along the southern portion of the fire to help establish a perimeter. Aviation resources supported suppression efforts by conducting aerial firing operations to eliminate interior pockets of unburned fuel.

The National Fire, which was discovered late on Sunday, February 22, is burning on federal lands south of Interstate 75, approximately 20 miles east of Naples, FL. The fire is now estimated at 24,014 acres and remains 0% contained.

Smoke Impacts to Major Roadways

Smoke continues to affect several major transportation corridors, including:
  • Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley)
  • State Road 29
  • U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail)
Today’s daytime winds are lighter than the previous two days, and wind direction has changed from north to south. This may increase smoke impacts in surrounding communities and along roadways, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Reduced visibility and temporary or intermittent road closures remain possible.

Public Safety Advisory

Motorists traveling through the area are urged to:
  • Exercise extreme caution.
  • Reduce speed and use low-beam headlights in smoky conditions.
  • Allow extra travel time.
  • Watch for emergency personnel and equipment operating along roadways.
  • Monitor local traffic updates and emergency alerts.
Management Transition

On Thursday, February 26, local fire managers will transfer command of the National Fire to the Southern Area Gray Team, an interagency incident management team. As additional non-local resources arrive, some local resources will be released, making them available to respond to future initial attack incidents. The incoming fire team will work closely with local fire management and Big Cypress National Preserve staff to ensure continuity and sustained response. Public and firefighter safety remain the highest priorities.

Stay Informed

Area closures remain in place to support suppression operations and ensure public safety.
