NPS Climate Change Response Program Releases New Scenario Planning Publications
February 2020 - The latest issue of the NPS Climate Change Response Program Newsletter announced the program's release of three new publications on climate change scenario planning. They include:
- A new report entitled Climate change scenario planning for resource stewardship: Applying a novel approach in Devils Tower National Monument explains scenario planning as a climate change adaptation tool in general, then describes how the tool was applied in the context of a first-of-its-kind pilot project to dovetail scenario planning with NPS Resource Stewardship Strategy development.
- A new report entitled Implications of Climate Change for the Water Supply of the Chisos Mountains Developed Area examines the connection between contemporary climate conditions and discharge from Oak Spring, the sole water source for the highly visited Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park (BIBE). The report assesses projected future climate conditions at BIBE, and links those conditions to estimates of Oak Spring flow to provide supporting information for water development decisions in the Chisos basin.
- A new article entitled Repeatable approaches to work with scientific uncertainty and advance climate change adaptation in US national parks describes how the NPS Climate Change Response Program has refined methods for developing and applying climate change scenario planning to support national park management. It outlines the development of climate-resource scenarios from global climate models, then provides case studies of multiple scenario-based approaches that exemplify a range of uses of the standardized methodology-from simple to complex-to help prepare parks for future conditions under climate change.
